GalNet has spent the past week building something, and it does not look good for the Independent Detention Foundation. On 14 September it reported pirate affiliates shadowing prison ships. On 17 September one of those ships disappeared.

The first report came from the governing authorities of several star systems, who noticed unusually high traffic around prison reformatories during inmate transfers. Known affiliates of local pirate factions were seen flying in formation near the prison ships. Not attacking, just watching. The Foundation's reading was blunt: "the pattern and frequency of their appearance suggest that these criminal elements are observing inmate transport movements." It also noted that many of the pilots involved had seen the inside of its cells before.

EVE-597 goes missing

Three days later, the Riker-class Reformatory EVE-597 failed to report in after a scheduled jump. It left Nones and never arrived at Gliese 506.2, and no signs of debris have been found. The ship holds a prisoner transit contract across four waypoints in independent space, Nones, Gliese 506.2, Evenses and Chematja, and authorities in all four say it has not been seen since.

The Foundation is treating the disappearance as "concerning", says there should be no cause for alarm if anyone comes across the vessel on their travels, and insists catastrophic mis-jumps are "vanishingly rare". Put the two reports side by side, though, and a mis-jump is not the explanation most commanders will reach for first.

Why it is worth watching

The surface mining story showed how this tends to go: GalNet ran a research piece in August, and within weeks it had become the Rhino and a community goal. There is nothing to fly for this one yet, and no community goal is active as of writing, so treat it as a heads up. If you pass through Nones, Gliese 506.2, Evenses or Chematja, keep your eyes open.

Meanwhile, the Rhino trials wrap up

The Wreaken and Vodel community goal we flagged last week has closed, and GalNet called the trials a resounding success, with Wreaken's Dr. Ben Curtis saying the amount of minerals recovered was "unprecedented". The Rhino stays an early release purchase for now, with standard shipyard availability still promised "at a later date".
