Three weeks ago we wrote about a GalNet research story that hinted at better surface mining and a scanner that could find deposits nobody else could see, and we said to treat it as a heads up. It turned up. On 2 September Frontier released the Rhino, the first new SRV in Elite Dangerous since 2021, and with it an entirely new mechanic: surface mining.

What the Rhino actually is

Vodel's Rhino is a heavy, armoured surface vehicle built for extraction rather than exploration. It seats up to three commanders, carries a Planetary Mineral Scanner and deployable mining rigs, and has a bigger cargo hold plus a built in refinery so material gets processed on site. Frontier traded some speed for torque, so it can climb steep ground while hauling the extra weight.

The catch is the hangar. The Rhino only deploys from the new large planetary vehicle hangar, and that only fits a specific list of hulls: the Alliance Crusader, Anaconda, Beluga Liner, Caspian Explorer, Federal Corvette, Federal Gunship, Imperial Cutter, Keelback, Krait Mk II, Panther Clipper Mk II, Type-9 Heavy, Type-10 Defender and Type-11 Prospector. If your daily driver is not on that list, your first purchase is a ship.

For now the Rhino is an ARX early access purchase, sold in Standard, Stellar and Galactic editions, and the large hangar modules are free to claim in outfitting once you own it. GalNet says it will move to wider shipyard availability later, but the announcement does not give a date for that.

How surface mining works

The scanner marks buried mineral deposits both on the ground and on your sensors, so the crew can pick a spot and set up rigs instead of driving in circles. The design choice that matters most is what happens afterwards: once collected, deposits regenerate very slowly, so a rich world will not keep paying out if everyone piles onto it. Senior Game Designer Curtis Griffiths is openly curious how that plays out: "Elite Dangerous players tend to share their favourite worlds for discovery, so will we see collective groups attempting to share knowledge, or will the allure of a great find mean that system is hidden away from public discussion?"

Under Siege is free for everyone

You do not need to buy anything for the other half of the update. Under Siege, the latest Operation, went live for all players on the same day. A planetary settlement sends a distress call, and your squad has to break the blockade in the sky, fight through the settlement's facilities on foot to retake the port, then scramble back to the ship for a bigger threat. Ship combat and on foot combat in one run makes it a good excuse to get a wing together.

A community goal paying triple until 17 September

Wreaken and Vodel have opened a community goal to test the rig's output. Sign up at Metz Enterprise in the Ega system, then sell any of the requested commodities there, sourced from nearby markets: palladium, gold, silver, bertrandite, indite, gallite, coltan, uraninite, lepidolite, cobalt, rutile or water. Everything sold for the initiative gets a 3x price multiplier. It is a trading goal, so you do not need a Rhino to take part.

A single contribution earns a Type-11 Prospector Umbra Red paint job, a Rhino Excavation Precision-Red paint job and a Vodel decal, plus credits depending on the tier reached. It closes on 17 September, so this one does not wait around.

Meanwhile on GalNet

The Radicoida unica research is turning political. On 11 September President Felicia Winters accused the coalition behind the October Accords of weaponising the flora after leaving the Federation out of the research, and warned that "any use of force will be met with the strongest of responses." Worth keeping an eye on if you fly Federal.

Mining with the squadron

A three seat mining vehicle is about the most squadron shaped thing Frontier has shipped in a while, and Under Siege is built for a wing that can split between the sky and the ground.
