The Surface Mining Story

A piece of mining research has just landed on GalNet that could be worth more to your credit balance than any community goal this year. Wreaken Mining reckons it has found a better way to cut rock, and the knock-on effect is that your Detailed Surface Scanner may be about to get a lot more interesting.
The report, published on 24 August 3312, credits Dr. Ben Curtis with the breakthrough. The technical claim is that "by introducing a modulating wave form and beam focus into a tighter laser housing" you get materially better extraction from surface deposits. The part that matters for pilots is the second half: the same principle allows a modified Detailed Surface Scanner to pick out mining locations that current scanners simply do not show.
Why this could be a big deal
Surface mining has spent a long time as the poor relation of ring mining. It is fiddly, the payouts have rarely justified the SRV time, and most commanders who tried it went back to laser mining a nice quiet ring. A scanner that reveals sites you could not previously find changes the maths, and GalNet is openly floating the possibility of a surface mining boom across the galaxy. If that happens, the commanders who get their SRV and their scanner sorted early are the ones who profit before prices settle.
"A scanner that finds sites nobody could see before does not just improve mining. It redraws the map of where mining happens."
The Exiles
Worth watching, not yet worth rebuilding your ship
A note of caution. This arrived as a GalNet research story rather than a patch note, and GalNet is where Frontier plants a seed before the mechanics follow. Treat it as a heads up rather than a green light. Nothing has changed in your outfitting screen today, but this is the sort of item worth remembering in a few weeks when the modified scanners actually turn up.
Meanwhile, Colonia signs off
In quieter news, the Colonia tenth anniversary wrapped up on 20 August with Jaques Station reaching megamarket status, giving the region a full suite of outfitting and services. Six tourist beacons are now planted across significant Colonia systems, and the region has eight established engineers. For anyone who hauled out there during the supply drive, that is what the cargo bought: Colonia is now somewhere you can properly base out of rather than somewhere you visit.
Digging in with the squadron
Mining is more fun with a wing, if only for someone to talk to while the SRV bounces across another crater. If you want company for it, or you want to know whether it is worth your time before you commit, come and say hello in our Discord, and our Elite Dangerous hub has more on flying with the squadron. New commanders welcome, no gatekeeping.
