CIG's annual Foundation Festival returns from July 29 to August 12, and the headline could not be simpler. For those two weeks, Star Citizen is free to play.

No starter pack, no purchase, no catch. Anyone can download the game and get full access to the persistent universe on the current Alpha 4.9 LIVE build, with a rotating set of eight ships and vehicles free to fly across the event. It is the lowest-barrier window there is to find out whether the 'verse is for you.

Running alongside the free fly is Ship Showdown 2026, a community popularity tournament where players vote daily to crown the 'verse's favourite flyable ship. It is a good excuse to go and fly the contenders and see what all the fuss is about.

Drops and referrals

There are Twitch Drops too. From July 29 to August 12, watch four hours of any Drops-enabled Star Citizen stream to unlock the ATLS Foundation Festival paint, with more on offer if you link a subscription. And there is a referral hook: recruit a new citizen with your referral code during the event and you unlock a permanent Argo ATLS power mech, so bringing a friend pays off for both of you.

If you have been meaning to give SC a proper go, the next fortnight removes every excuse. It is also a target-rich window for group play: new pilots everywhere, ships to test, and a festival on. Star Citizen is a game that clicks far faster with people showing you the ropes than it does bouncing off solo on day one.
