Last week we covered RSI Discovery Month, which celebrates the arrival of the Constellation Mk V Centaurus. Since then RSI has published a Q&A with its vehicle and gameplay teams, so here is what is actually different about the new Connie, and how to fly one without buying it.
Bigger and tougher than the Mk IV
The Mk V has grown in every dimension. It carries more cargo, enough for some of the largest current ground vehicles, and the crew gets internal missile restocking, internal component access and better places to rest. It is tuned as a heavier class than the Mk IV, so it turns and accelerates more slowly and needs more room to reposition in a fight. In exchange it is far more durable, carries a second size 3 shield generator, has higher armour deflection and integrity, and reaches a higher NAV speed. RSI is clear that it is still less heavily armoured than dedicated warships like the Hammerhead and Perseus.
Guns, missiles and the bridge
The pilot keeps four size 5 weapons, as on the Mk IV. The turrets are now quad size 3 mounts, run remotely from the bridge by separate crew members. The missiles are consolidated from four mixed racks into two matching ones, 32 size 2 missiles in total, with storage racks behind them so the crew can reload in flight, as on the Perseus. The bridge is all new but keeps the whole crew in one room, and the original's struts are gone for a much better view.
"Slower to turn and much harder to kill. The new Connie is built for crews who would rather stay in the fight."
The Exiles
The Skylark
The Centaurus carries its own snub fighter, the Skylark. The pilot lies prone to keep it slim, it packs three size 2 weapons and a pair of five-missile size 1 racks, and unusually for a snub it runs two shield generators, which makes it heavier and less agile than most. For now the Skylark is the only ship that can dock with the Mk V, and the Centaurus cannot refuel, rearm or repair it. RSI plans to introduce the Skylark as a standalone ship at this year's Intergalactic Aerospace Expo, and says more Mk V variants are planned, covering both familiar and new roles.
Fly it free for five days
You do not have to buy one to try it. RSI Discovery Month is still running across Stanton, and completing the Constellation Rental Offer mission gives you five days of access to the Centaurus. The event's Defense, Transport and Collection missions pay out paints, flight blades, armour, weapons and tools that are yours to keep. And until 27 October, watching any Drops-enabled Star Citizen stream for four hours in total unlocks the Phoenix Insignia Display.
Day of the Vara starts Wednesday
The spooky season begins on Wednesday 21 October with Day of the Vara, which CIG promises will bring "a creepy contest, petrifying prizes, and other fearsome finds". The same day brings the next Roadmap Update and Roundup, and on Friday the second episode of 10 From the Community puts CIG's Technical Directors in front of community questions about technology.
Flying with the org
A multi-crew ship is only as good as the people at its turrets. Our Star Citizen org UTLAGARNIR is in the Discord, and the Star Citizen hub has more on how we fly. New pilots always welcome.
