An abandoned camp in Minecraft's dappled forest under red and orange poplar trees

Back in August we ran through Minecraft's third drop of the year while it was still working through snapshots and did not have a name or a date. It has both now. Mojang revealed the name on 5 September: the drop is called Wilderness Bound, and it sets off on Tuesday 15 September for Java and Bedrock.

Built around camping out

Mojang is pitching this one as an expedition, and two small additions carry that theme further than you might expect. Straw beds let you skip the night without resetting your spawn point, and all they take is three hay bales. That quietly fixes one of the oldest annoyances of exploring: sleeping somewhere far from home used to move your spawn there. Now you can sleep out on the trail and your spawn stays at base.

Cushions are the other one. You can find them in abandoned camps or craft one from three wool slabs of the same colour, and they give you somewhere to sit around the campfire. Vanilla Minecraft has never really had seating, and players have spent years faking it with minecarts and boats, so this is a small thing that a lot of builders will be glad of.

"Three hay bales and one very old problem solved. You can finally sleep out on the trail without dragging your spawn point along with you."

The Exiles

The dappled forest and its camps

The new biome is the dappled forest, full of tall poplar trees in fiery reds, oranges and yellows, with a full poplar wood set to go with it. Shelf mushrooms grow out of the trunks and fallen logs, and Mojang is openly pitching them as parkour. Scattered through it are abandoned camps, which is where the cushions turn up and where you can go looking for clues about whoever camped there before you.

The rest of what we covered in August made it through: stairs and slabs for concrete and wool in all 16 colours, and the new explorer maps.

A note about our server

Worth being clear: our own server, ExilesMC Aero, runs a modded pack on Minecraft 1.21.1, so vanilla drops like this one do not land on it. Wilderness Bound is for your vanilla worlds, Realms and single player. If you want to talk builds in either, or see what the Aero pack is about, come and say hello in our Discord, and the ExilesMC hub has the details. New builders welcome.
