Minecraft gets a native Nintendo Switch 2 version on 27 October. It comes in three digital editions plus a physical retail version, and if you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch, you can most likely upgrade for free.

The three editions

Every version, including the physical one, comes with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals. The Standard Edition is the base game. The Deluxe Collection adds three add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks), three exclusive Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins. The Ultimate Collection adds five add-ons (those three plus Decocraft and Weapons + Tools), five exclusive Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins.

Two catches from Mojang's small print: Vibrant Visuals is not available in some gameplay, including split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds and content, and Minecoins included or bought on a Nintendo device can only be used on Nintendo.

The free upgrade

If you own a digital copy of Minecraft for the original Switch, you can get the digital Standard Edition for Switch 2 free until the end of January 2027 in most territories, or upgrade to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection at a discount. It is only available through the Nintendo eShop. The exceptions are Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, where the upgrade costs 100 JPY, 30 NTD and 25 THB.
