Alliance Tournament XXII stopped being a preview and started being a tournament. The first preliminary weekend is done, the second runs this Saturday and Sunday, and the finals in October will be played in front of a live audience for the first time.
58 teams entered. The Swiss format gives every one of them seven matches to prove they belong, and only the top 16 in the standings when those seven rounds are done go through to the finals. There is no early elimination, which means a team can lose its opening match and still qualify, and it also means nobody gets to coast.
When and where to watch
Matches start at 13:30 UTC on each day of competition. The preliminary weekends are 29 and 30 August, which is already in the books, then 5 and 6 September and 12 and 13 September. Everything is broadcast on the Fenris Creations Twitch channel with a crew of tournament veterans, analysts and commentators calling it, which matters more than it sounds: tournament EVE moves fast and a good caster is the difference between watching a light show and understanding a fight.
The format itself is built for spectating. Teams field up to ten pilots against a 200 point limit on what they can bring, and a match lasts ten minutes. That constraint is why tournament EVE looks nothing like a nullsec brawl. Every ship is a deliberate choice, and losing one is immediately visible.
"Ten minutes, ten pilots, 200 points. EVE's usual answer of bringing more people is off the table, so the answer has to be bringing better ones."
The Exiles
A finals with an actual crowd
This is the part that has not happened before. The 31 October and 1 November finals broadcast will be produced from Nottingham in the United Kingdom, with seating for spectators to watch the decisive stages live alongside the tournament talent, plus food, drinks and other activities around the studio.
Worth being precise about what that is and is not. This is not a LAN where the pilots fly from the venue. The matches still happen online on Tranquility exactly as they always have. What is new is that there is somewhere to physically go and watch it happen with other people, which for a twenty two year old game with a scattered playerbase is a reasonable thing to want. The finals run as best of three series, narrowing to a best of five grand final between the last two alliances standing.
Watching along
You do not need to fly in EVE to enjoy the Alliance Tournament, and it is one of the few times the game's combat is legible to an outsider. If you would rather watch with people who can explain why a ship just evaporated, our EVE corp The Exiled Titans is in the Discord, and the EVE Online hub has more on the corp. Newbros and returning capsuleers both welcome.
