The Herald, an EVE Online Alliance Tournament XXII prize hull

The prize list for Alliance Tournament XXII is out, and the Amarr Empire has put two brand new hulls on the table. The preliminaries start this weekend.

The two prize ships are the Herald and the Penitence. The Herald is an electronic attack frigate based on the Sentinel, built around tracking and guidance disruption with eight effective turrets for fighting at range. The Penitence is a combat recon cruiser based on the Curse, pairing weapon disruption with heavy energy neutralisation and serious tackle. Both wear Amarr gold over black, and both are the kind of hull you will see once a year in a killmail and never forget.

How many actually exist

Scarcity is the whole point. Only 140 of each hull will ever be handed out, split by finishing position: 40 of each to the winners, 20 to second place, 8 to the top six, 6 to the top eight, 4 to the top twelve and 2 to the top sixteen. That is the entire supply for all time, which is exactly why tournament hulls end up worth more than most people's entire hangar.

Beyond the ships there are Amarr-themed Victory SKINs awarded for match wins, covering ten Amarr vessels including the Apocalypse Navy Issue and the Guardian. The winning captain gets a digital trophy delivered to their hangar plus a physical one displayed at Fanfest, and the Alliance Tournament Monument in Manarq gets updated with the winners' names, which is about as permanent as recognition gets in New Eden.

When to watch

The preliminaries run on 29 and 30 August, then 5 and 6 September and 12 and 13 September, and they are fought on Thunderdome rather than the live server. The main tournament moves to Tranquility, a 16-team bracket of best-of-three series building to a best-of-five final. Teams that placed well in ATXXI, including The Tuskers Co., Evasive Maneuvering and Psychokids, were invited back without paying the 4,000 PLEX entry.

Watching it with the corp

The Alliance Tournament is the one time EVE's combat is laid out where you can actually follow it, which makes it a genuinely good watch even if you have never undocked in anger.
