Alliance Tournament XXII is spinning up, and this year CCP has changed the format in a way that should mean more matches, more comebacks and a better watch for everyone who is not flying in it.

The headline change is Swiss format in the preliminaries. Instead of the old structure where an early loss could end your run, Swiss pairs teams by record across multiple rounds. CCP's reasoning is straightforward: it "increases the volume of tournament matches, providing teams with multiple additional opportunities for redemption". More fights, and fewer teams going home after one bad Saturday. The finals then tighten up, dropping from a top-32 to a top-16 with interleaved best-of-series matches.

The Amarr are paying for it

This year's sponsor is the Amarr Empire, and the prize ships follow suit: Sentinel and Curse hulls are being adapted into the tournament prizes, with the design draft due around 10 August. Tournament prize hulls are among the rarest things in New Eden, so the reveal is worth watching even if you never undock in one.

The shape of the thing

For the uninitiated, the Alliance Tournament is 10v10 with hull-specific point values, so team composition is a puzzle before a single shot is fired. Entry costs 4,000 PLEX and around 50 teams typically sign up. Notably, the top four from ATXXI get free entry this year but still have to register, with no automatic advancement, so last year's finalists start on the same footing as everyone else.

When to watch

Registration and team announcements are already done. The next markers are 17 August for the prelims roster lock and 19 August when team rosters are announced. Then the broadcasts: preliminary weekends on 29 and 30 August, 5 and 6 September, and 12 and 13 September, with the finals broadcast on 31 October and 1 November from Nottingham in the UK.

Watching it with the corp

The Alliance Tournament is one of the few times EVE puts its combat on a stage where the mechanics are visible, which makes it a genuinely good watch even if you are new.
