A ship flying past a megaship in Elite Dangerous

Last week we covered the community goal in Redonesses after the breakout aboard the prison ship EVE-597. It ended the way the Foundation hoped. On 8 October the Independent Detention Foundation thanked the independent pilots who protected the recovery effort: EVE-597 is back under Foundation control, every convict still aboard is secured, and local security says the vast majority of the escapees are back in custody.

It was an inside job

That is not quite the end of the story. The Foundation has brought in the Wallglass Investigations Agency to work out how so many prisoners got out of their cells, and the first findings are uncomfortable. Detective Eric Gunnarson: "Initial investigations have recovered partial telemetry from EVE-597's comms array. The breakout appeared to have been coordinated with support from inside the ship."

He would not yet say whether the megaship's security data had been passed to a third party before the escape, only that "it is one avenue we are actively exploring." Set that beside the pirates who spent September shadowing prison transports, and the shape of it is getting clearer. EVE-597 goes back on its normal itinerary as soon as possible.

"Someone on the inside opened the doors, and someone on the outside was waiting. GalNet has not named either of them yet."

The Exiles

Brewer wants jump satellites

The same day, Brewer Corporation announced a fix for a real fleet carrier headache. In a system with no planets or moons, only one carrier can sit stationary, which stops other carriers targeting that system to continue their journey. Brewer's answer is a jump satellite that mimics the planetary body signal carrier jump computers look for. CEO Madelyn Teague: "It's especially problematic for explorers in the furthest reaches of the galaxy where star density is at its lowest." The first batch is headed for carrier bottlenecks around Rackham's Peak.

The community goal filled almost at once

To build them, Brewer opened a community goal at the megaship Zero Squared in HIP 74116, asking for computer components, superconductors, semiconductors and power generators. The rewards were unusually generous: the top 75% of contributors get Size 4 and Size 5 SCO-enabled frame shift drives, pre-engineered with Increased Range and Fast Boot Sequence and their experimentals unlocked, and the top 50% get Size 6 and Size 7 drives on top.

Unsurprisingly, commanders piled in. The goal ends the moment its final target is met, and when we checked it already stood at 200,000,158 against a target of 200,000,000. If you were hoping to get in on it, it may well have closed by the time you read this.

Flying with the squadron

Whether it is the next turn in the EVE-597 story or the next community goal, both are better with a wing. If you want company, come and say hello in our Discord, and our Elite Dangerous hub has more on flying with the squadron. New commanders welcome, no gatekeeping.
