A space FPS more than a decade in the making has quietly crossed the finish line. Angels Fall First launched its 1.0 on 12 July, after a development run that started more than seven years before its 2015 early access debut. That is an 11-year road, give or take. It is out, and it is finished.
The pitch is best made by the developers themselves, because it is hard to improve on.
"Only in AFF can you spawn in your crew quarters, run to the bay watching the space fight out of the windows, launch a dropship, fight through the defenders to the enemy flagship, breach the hull, run and gun your way to the bridge, and shoot the enemy captain in the back of the neck."
Strangely Interactive
That is the whole game. Matches run to 64 players and take in infantry combat, ground vehicles and spacecraft in a single continuous fight, with capital ships that have complete interiors you can board and fight through. If you have ever sat in a Star Citizen boarding action and wished the capital ship battle outside the window was also real and also yours to lose, this is aiming squarely at that itch.
The bot support is the real story
Here is what makes it genuinely interesting rather than just a curiosity. It supports completely offline play, with robust bot support. You can run a full match solo, bring a handful of friends into a private lobby and fill the rest with bots, or open it up to everyone.
That solves the problem that kills most niche multiplayer games stone dead: you do not need to find 63 other people at 11pm on a Tuesday to get a full battle. Six players plus bots is a real match. That is a big deal, and it is the reason this is worth your time when a hundred other indie shooters are not. The price will not hurt either. It launched at $16.19 / GBP 12.03 with a 10% introductory discount running through 21 July, going to $17.99 afterwards.
If that sounds like your kind of thing, it is well worth a look at that price.
